ABOUT THE TEACHERS
THE BALBOA TRACK
KADIE & JOE PANGBURN
Hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, Kadie loves a good mystery, old Star Trek reruns and has a passion for the vintage jazz dances of the 30s & 40s. As a little girl she fell in love with actors like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers and Vera Ellen. She would prance around her living room creating improv routines to old movie soundtracks, and that’s where she still draws many of her dance inspirations from to this day. For her, dancing is about sharing a deep, personal connection with another human being for those three minutes on the floor and creating something magical together. With a bachelor’s degree in the study of creativity and how human beings can function to their highest creative potential, Kadie brings a unique perspective – and a good dose of geekery – to all her classes.
Also hailing from Huntsville – because they’re married – Joe Pangburn loves running, writing, the Denver Broncos, anything baseball and of course swing dancing. The latter to the point that he works on his flow with his rolling chair in his cubicle at work. (Try it! You’re welcome.) He loves musicality, flow, and the minutiae of balboa mechanics and fundamentals. As a competitor, Joe is a regular finalist in national and international balboa competitions at events such as Music City Shuffle and All Balboa Weekend, where in 2016 he won 1st place in the Am J&J. With a degree in communication and 16 years of teaching/coaching experience, he has a passion for helping people achieve beyond their goals. Together they’ve taught balboa to dancers from all over the southeastern United States, and are known for their ability to break down complex concepts into easily understood ideas. They enjoy sharing their love for balboa by bringing fun, laughter and the occasional rap into the classroom and are passionate about growing Balboa in the southeast. To that end, they are the creators and organizers of Bal-Ast Off; operate a bi-weekly balboa practice group out of their home; and are regular instructors in their regional community. |
THE BLUES TRACK
KRYSTAL & ADAM WILKERSON
Krystal has an uncanny energy and enthusiasm for blues music and dancing, and can often be seen at events all over the southeast and, indeed, the country, closing down late nights, frequently dancing until dawn. She’s been partner dancing in various styles since 2007; Blues stole her heart, however, in 2010, and has never let go. She’s a fierce competitor, making finals at multiple national blues dance competitions, and brings her fervor for connection into all of her dancing and instruction.
Adam’s been dancing in a variety of styles since 2004, but he followed Krystal into blues in 2010, and it’s been his primary focus ever since. He’s passionate about social dancing and blues music, and loves to explore all different blues styles in his setlists and instruction. Adam’s also danced at events all over the country and in Australia, and DJ’d throughout the Eastern US. His analytical approach to connection and value for intuition in dance provides a unique classroom environment. Krystal and Adam both still dance various swing styles (mostly balboa and lindy hop), and spend a lot of their free time hiking with their greyhounds and rock climbing. They’ve been teaching swing and blues since 2009, but have been focusing on blues instruction since 2014. They teach at the weekly meetings of Thursday Night Swing in Huntsville, both with each other and with other instructors in the area, and they host a biweekly blues group practicum at their home. Krystal’s passion for the dance is apparent in her teaching style: upbeat, personal, encouraging, and energetic. Adam’s experience teaching math makes his style more analytical and minutiae-oriented. Together, they balance out as an effective partnership, keen to instruct any group, and their collective passion for the dance is evident in their classes. |

FAQ
IS THERE A BEGINNER TRACK?
Unfortunately we will not be offering a beginner Blues or Balboa track at the event this year, however it is something we're considering should we do the event again in the future.
CAN I DO BOTH TRACKS?
While we too love both Balboa and Blues, and we know many people would love to do both tracks, for this event we believe a highly focused and dedicated progressive series will best serve our attendees, allowing our instructors to take each class on a journey to explore the beauty of close embrace within their chosen dance.
HOW EXPERIENCED DO I NEED TO BE FOR THIS?
In order for our instructors to dig right in with you and start exploring these two beautiful dances, we are asking that every attendee be comfortable and familiar with all the basic movements of their chosen dance. However, dancers registering for the Blues track do not need any experience with Balboa and vice versa. In addition, dancers registering for the Balboa track do not need any sort of prior experience dancing Balboa slowly.
IS THERE LOCAL HOUSING AVAILABLE?
YES! Just let us know you'll need housing when you register!
DO YOU HAVE A SPAFE SPACES POLICY OR CODE OF CONDUCT?
Yep, you can read it here HERE.
